DESCRIPTION:D’août à octobre 1959, Brandt sillonne l’île de Madagascar avec trois de ses compatriotes romands: le pasteur Henri Mercier, le photographe Fernand Perret et l’écrivain Edmond Pidoux. Parti sans scénario, le réalisateur arrive sur l’île pour réaliser une commande des Missions protestantes/Mission évangélique de Paris consistant à dresser le portrait des Malgaches. Il s’agit de démontrer l’objectif humanitaire de ces institutions et de justifier leur présence après la colonisation. Brandt évoque la vie malgache, son histoire et ses coutumes, sans toutefois mentionner l’insurrection sanglante de 1947. Questionnant la perception raciste d’une culture malgache dite « primitive », il capte autant la modernité que les traditions, en particulier la coutume funéraire du retournement des morts.
